Capturing Missouri Regions

Introduction

Congratulations!  You have been seleceted to a very important position in the state of Missouri.  The citizens of Missouri have voted for YOU as the new Missouri governor.  As governor, your first task is very important.  You have decided that future Missouri citizens should have something to look at that tells them something about the regions of Missouri.  A time capsule would be perfect!  As governor, you have the honor of choosing the artifacts that best represent one of the five regions of Missouri.  The citizens of Missouri are confident that you will do a great job.  Congratulations again, and good luck!

 

 

Task

The time capsule you will create will contain artifacts that represent on of the five regions of Missouri.

It is important to know what the citizens of Missouri expect of you.  Each time capsule should include the following student-made items:

• An outline map of Missouri with your region labeled and colored, and also showing the major rivers and cities in Missouri.

• An Inspiration diagram that includes information on jobs & economy, people & culture, and landforms & geography.

• An economic product map of the region.

• A postcard picturing a memorable landmark from the region on the front.  The back will inlcude a message that explains the importance of this resource on the region and caption for the picture.

• The lyrics and a recording of a jingle or song that would convince others to visit the region.

 

As you complere each item to be placed in your time capsule, you should choose things that best represent the region.  Once all of your items are complete, place them inside a shoebox that is decorated with words and pictures that describe your region.

 

Procedure

You will belong  to a group researching on the the five regions:

• Glaciated Till Plain

• Osage Plains

• Alluvial River Plain

• Ozark Highlands

• Mississippi Lowlands

 

It's time to start creating your time capsule! 

 

Geography Expert - The geography expert will create the Missouri map and the postcard featuring a memorable landmark found in the region.

 

Economic Expert - The natural resouce expert will create the economic product map of the region and will collect information from the rest of the group to create the Inspiration diagram.

 

Marketing Expert - The marketing expert wil write the lyrics to a jingle or song.  They lyrics should convince others to visit this region.  The marketing expert will need to consult with the geography and economic resource expert for adviceon what is important about the region.

 

Within your group, decide who will be each expert.  Now it is time to start researching and becoming experts!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now that you have researched your region and are an expert, get started on putting together your time capsule!  Just a reminder - the items the citizens of Missouri expect to see in these time capsules are listed in the Task section.  All items must be student-made and fit inside an shoebox.  If you have time and room in the shoebox, you may include additional artifacts.  When you are finished, you must present your time capsule to Missouri citizens for approval.

 

 

 

Evaluation

Conclusion

You have received high marks from your fellow Missouri citizens.  Not only do they have a time capsule of each Missouri region for their use, but you have now become an expert on the regions of Missouri.  Who knows, maybe after your term of office is over, the Missouri Department of Tourism will call you with a job offer!  Nice work!
